Purchasing Pokémon cards continues to be a dangerous proposition, as evidenced by the latest incident that took place in Hiroshima, Japan. A 22-year-old man bought a box of cards for a midnight release earlier in the night on September 24, and later that morning he was attacked while coming out of a 7/11 convenience store.
According to the report, the attacker punched the man in the face, stole his Pokémon cards and escaped by car. In addition to falling to the ground, the victim suffered heavy bruising on his face. He told authorities the attacker complained about his purchase before punching him in the face and stealing his cards, so the incident is being treated as an assault and robbery.
At the time of this writing, the last report was that the police in the area had a 24-year-old man in custody for questioning.
This is just one of many incidents taking place around the world in response to highly sought-after Pokémon cards, which is not something we ever expected to be writing about in 2021. Stores like Target and Walmart even had to exclusively move card sales online in the United States in response to similar cases, so it’s a tough time for fans who just want to purchase their cards in peace.
