Japanese stationery company San-X’s mascot character brand Sumikko Gurashi—which was first created in 2012 and went on to become one of the company’s most successful brands—had a feature film released back in 2019. Now, a second film—Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night—has been given a November 2021 premiere window in Japan.
The first Sumikko Gurashi film managed to pull in ¥1.45 billion (about US$13 million) during its run in the Japanese box office, topping the charts for its opening weekend. The sequel has Takahiro Omori (Natsume Yujin-cho) directing and Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!) providing the screenplay for the Fanworks production.
