Eva’s Hideaki Anno Directs Hikaru Utada Music Video

Eva’s Hideaki Anno Directs Hikaru Utada Music VideoHideaki Anno’s three-hour magnum opus, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, hit Japanese theaters yesterday. The film features the single “One Last Kiss” by Hikaru Utada, who’s been supplying Eva themes since 1.0 back in 2007. So, for the music video, Utada tapped none other than Anno, who says he “readily consented” to making it. It hit YouTube today.

Of course, these are strange times we live in, so it’s hard to shoot large-scale videos these days—especially because Utada and Anno are currently on different continents. Instead, it seems, Anno directed Utada via email, who shot the footage with a small crew in London. Anno then edited it in Japan, adding some of his own footage.

You can see the result for yourself below, and if you’re lucky enough to be in Japan, you can see Evangelion 3.0+1.0 right now.

Meanwhile, you can look forward to hearing Utada in the upcoming anime series To Your Eternity.
