Demon Slayer and Animal Crossing Among Japan’s Top 2020 Buzzwords

buzzwords

Another year, another opportunity for Japanese company U-Can to poll folks to find out the top 10 buzzwords for the past 365 days. While many thought the now-postponed Olympics would make this year’s edition extra sporty, the results ended up reflecting the state of the world perfectly, including everything from COVID-19 buzzwords to popular media like Demon Slayer.

The buzzword that made the top of the list was “sanmitsu,” which has been referred to as the “Three Cs” in English. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike popularized the term during this year’s State of Emergency, with the Three Cs in question being the act of avoiding “closed spaces, crowds, and close-contact situations.”

Other popular buzzwords were the yokai “amabie,” whose image is supposed to ward off diseases, as well as “solo camp,” “abe no mask” (the campaign that had masks of questionable quality being handed out to households in Japan), YouTuber “Fuwa-chan,” Korean drama Crash Landing with You, and more.

Beyond Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the top otaku-related media to get a shoutout on the list was Atsumori, which is the Japanese abbreviation for Animal Crossing, which lit up the world earlier this year when Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrived on Switch just in time to stave off boredom during lockdown.
