The God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka—creator of Astro Boy, Black Jack, Phoenix and more, and pioneer of the anime art form—passed away back in 1989. Despite that small hangup, there’s a new Osamu Tezuka manga in the works, and it’s all thanks to the artificial intelligence technology of Japanese tech firm Kioxia.
Taken from the Japanese word kioku, or memory, Kioxia—formerly known as Toshiba Memory—aims to digitize Tezuka’s works and analyze them. By doing so, they hope to discover the key elements that make his art unique and apply it to the question of what type of manga Tezuka would draw if he were alive today.
Since Tezuka left behind such a massive body of work, there’s plenty for Kioxia to analyze. As for the specifics of the project, we’ll have to wait and see what they come up with, but you can get an idea of what they’re all about in the promotional video below.
