Frozen’s huge. Besides winning the Academy Award for best animated feature, it’s conquered box offices worldwide, Japan being no exception. But it’s not just dominating ticket sales — the film’s soundtrack has hit #1 on the Oricon music sales chart for three weeks straight, with 575,000 copies sold to date.
To put this in perspective, the last time an animated film soundtrack sold this well in Japan was 1979’s Symphonic Poem: Galaxy Express 999, which held the top spot for a mind-blowing eight weeks. Beyond that, the last time any film soundtrack held the throne that long, be it live-action or otherwise, was Flash Dance’s 10-week reign in 1983. To put that in perspective, it’s the the first time this has happened since music has been sold on CD. That just about says it all, doesn’t it?
Interestingly, the soundtrack album comprises two CDs – one with the original English versions of the songs, and the second with all the songs rerecorded in Japanese (apparently standard Disney operating procedure). The Japanese version of “Let It Go,” which won best original song at the 86th Academy Awards, is sung by J-pop singer May J.
