Like most idol acts, AKB48 is all about youth, with the average age of its members hovering around 17. But AKB’s looking to raise that average by hunting for an adult member.
Yes, if you’re a woman over 30, AKB48 wants you – at least temporarily. It’s part of a tie-up with ice cream brand Papico. As one member in the commercial directly states, “we want more adults to eat Papico!” The winner will star in a commercial and appear at AKB events. It’s unclear whether there will be any actual singing or dancing involved.
It all seems kind of condescending and gimmicky – but wait, that describes AKB48 as a whole, doesn’t it?
