Virtual Boy 8-25-11: Goin’ On a Gargoyle’s Quest

Nintendo might be the master of mixing excitement with pure, uncut disinterest, and even a dash of “really?” Take this week’s downloads, for instance, if you want to see where I’m going with this.

On one hand we have Capcom’s Game Boy title Gargoyle’s Quest, which puts the spotlight on Ghosts ‘n Goblins enemy Firebrand, a.k.a. Red Arremer. In this side-scrolling adventure-RPG, you lead Firebrand toward his destiny to become the Red Blaze and conquer the Destroyers. Good times, recommended.

On the other we have a freakin’ calculator. A calculator that costs two bucks. My shoelaces probably have a calculator in them, so I’m not really sure what Nintendo’s thinking. It’s there if you want it, though!

Rounding out the “Featured” section is The Ignition Factor, a WiiWare title that puts you in the shoes of a brave firefighter who saves people from towering infernos and other fiery disasters. And, of course, a 3D Blue Man Group video. There’s also Let’s Create! Pottery (eShop/DSiWare), Magical Whip: Wizards of Phantasmal Forest (eShop, DSiWare) and a demo version of the WiiWare game Kyotokei.

Hopefully next week will see the release of Calculator II: The Lost Levels.
