Author Asato Asato’s 86 light novel series has been running since April 2017 under Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko imprint, and now its ending is somewhat in sight. According to Asato, the next volume will officially kick off the final arc of the story.
That arc is currently titled District 86, and it will start in volume 14. The volume that just launched is the series’ 13th, which hit shelves in Japan on January 10.
The 86 TV anime adaptation made its way to screens in April 2021, with the second cour following in October 2021. The anime is directed by Toshimasa Ishii, with Toshiya Ono on series composition and Tetsuya Kawakami adapting Shirabii’s character designs for the A-1 Pictures production.
Crunchyroll streams the 86 anime and Yen Press publishes the original light novels, describing the story like so:
The Republic of San Magnolia has been attacked by its neighbor, the Empire. Outside the 85 districts of the Republic there is the “non-existent 86th district,” where young men and women continue to fight. Sheen directs the actions of young suicide bombers, while Lena is a “curator” who commands a detachment from a remote rear. The story of the tragic struggle between these two begins!
