Uzumaki, the long (and we mean long) awaited anime adaptation of the manga by Junji Ito, finally has a premiere date. The series is set to debut on Toonami September 28. It’ll also stream on Max.
Along with this news comes a brand-new trailer for the Hiroshi Nagahama-directed series, showing off Ito’s mad story in all its newly animated glory. Long live the spiral!
Uzumaki was originally announced for 2020 before being delayed multiple times. Co-produced by Production I.G USA and Adult Swim, it stars:
Kirie Goshima: Abby Trott / Uki Satake
Shuichi Saito: Robbie Daymond / Shinichiro Miki
Azami Kurotani: Cristina Vee / Mariya Ise
Kirie’s father: Doug Stone / Toshio Furukawa
Shuichi’s father: Aaron LaPlante / Takashi Matsuyama
Shuichi’s mother: Mona Marshall / Miki Doi
Katayama: Max Mittelman / Katsutoshi Matsuzaki
Uzumaki was previously adapted into a wild and wacky live-action film in 2000 directed by Higuchinsky, which is totally worth tracking down. Here’s how Viz describes the original Junji ito manga:
Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world. The bizarre masterpiece horror manga is now available all in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!
