Unbelievably, Undead Unluck has wrapped up its world-changing story. The war of the Negators is done, and life goes on. And we’ll be honest—we’re gonna miss this series. Fortunately, the anime adaptation will be continuing in some form. A follow-up special is planned, adapting more of the manga’s hard-hitting storyline.
As we wave farewell to Andy and Fuuko, we’re looking back on why we love this series as much as we do. Here’s what we’ll miss about Yoshifumi Tozuka’s amazing manga adventure.
The Weirdness
Let’s be real. Undead Unluck is super weird. A guy with a second personality in his brain can use his body as a series of blood-powered missiles. A girl has touch-transmitted terrible luck that increases the more she cares about you. And there are more people like them, each able to negate a certain rule of the world. Hence their name: Negators. And when they band together, they’re playing a game organized by the gods.
Battles are wild, ranging from gambling with a kaiju version of spring (yes, the season) to multilingual shiritori. The minute you think you have this series figured out, it throws you another curveball. And yet, in a weird way, it all fits together.
The Heart
Undead Unluck is packed with Negators, each with their own weird skill. While these skills are certainly helpful in fighting off literal gods, they make normal life difficult. A manga artist has the ability to see the future, but also can’t be observed by anyone around him. A model’s “Untouchable” ability means she has to live in a specially-designed sphere, to prevent her power from crushing anyone who gets near her. And then, of course, there’s Fuuko’s Unluck. Simply hugging her family led to their deaths.
Together, though, the Negators dream of a world where they can live normally. And to achieve that end, they’ll use their powers for all they’re worth. Maybe in a new world, they can see, be seen by, and hug their loved ones.
The Romance
The story of Undead Unluck kicks off with Fuuko’s love of a certain shoujo manga. As someone who can’t express affection without dooming a loved one, she can only dream of such a relationship. And then along comes the unkillable Andy. In order to achieve his “wicked sick” death, he’ll need to win Fuuko’s love. But that goal kind of become secondary once the two really do start caring about each other.
Andy and Fuuko’s slow-burn romance isn’t the only one to follow in this series, though. There are other couples who will warm your heart (or break it) scattered throughout the series. Even facing down an apocalypse, Negators can find love.
