2020 has been… a year. It’s just been a year, okay? Even if we’re already done and ready to start over in 2021, we still have about half a year left, so anime fans in Japan decided to gather their favorite buzzwords of the year so far.
The poll comes from news site Gadget Tsushin, which asked fans which words and phrases they felt summed up some of this year’s top anime-related experiences, shows, and moments. Here’s a quick look at how the top three turned out.
Coming in third place is a term that’s all-too familiar at this point. Thanks to the effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the industry, that phrase is none other than…
3. Broadcast Delay
Hopefully we won’t be hearing too much more of this one, but we won’t be holding our breath either.
Coming up second is a series of words that also serves as the catch phrase of Princess Connect! Re: Dive‘s Pecorine.
2. Yabai desu ne? (How crazy is that?)
This one we can definitely get behind. It might even apply to a lot of 2020 depending on how you use it.
Finally, we have:
1. Breathing Style
This one comes from all the different breathing styles, or swordsmanship styles, taught and used by the Demon Slayer Corps in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime. Seeing as how this series just couldn’t stay out of the news even well after its season came to an end, it’s no surprise that something Demon Slayer related made it to the top of the list.
What words or phrases do you associate with the first half of 2020 as far as anime is concerned? Let us know what anime terminology comes to mind in the comments!
