This Akira Production Art Blog is Pure Eye Candy

Big shout-out to Boing Boing, who have stumbled across and shared this amazing Tumblr full of high-quality production materials from Akira, the 1988 classic that needs no introduction (or shouldn’t, anyway, but as it ages, you do meet folks who haven’t seen it).

Subject-28 is the “outpost” of the Art of Akira Exhibit, a physical exhibition which has made the rounds of museums and conventions over the last few years. Aside from cels, key frames and sketches, the site also features some great animated gifs that show clips from the film in various stages of production.

The more I learn about Akira, the more I realize it was truly a one-of-a-kind production the likes of which we may never see again. But thanks to sites like Subject-28, at least we can dive deep into its eye-popping details.

And for anime fans who haven’t seen Akira yet: get to it!
