A new anime season means new anime couples… though for avid manga readers, it’s like meeting old friends all over again! Lots of new shows hail from existing manga and web comics, meaning we’re familiar with a handful of the new characters coming to the screen. And in our experience… some of these relationships and crushes are messy on a whole other level. Like, a paranormal level.
From sci-fi antics to witchcraft to the problems of reincarnation, here are three potential duos who are going to have a very difficult time getting together.
Arthur and Tessia, The Beginning After the End
Many anime couples start as childhood friends, and The Beginning After the End appears to be setting up for the same. Young protagonist Arthur Leywin meets the elven Tessia Eralith early in the series, and their chance encounter will lead to a bond that lasts years. Tessia’s grandfather also seems eager to see the two of them get together one day. There’s just one problem: Arthur is a grown man reincarnated into the body of a child.
In his previous life, Arthur was King Grey. Even as a baby, he has an adult mind. Because of that, there are a lot of things he refuses to do: high on the list being dating. Instead, he uses these early years to hone his magical ability and appreciate having a family and friends. Perhaps when he’s older… though, as web novel readers know, that introduces a whole other level of issues.
Nico and Moi, Witch Watch
Anime couples, and couples from other forms of entertainment, know: dating a witch is hard. Just ask Vision. Or Darrin Stephens. And then there’s Witch Watch, an off-the-wall rom-com about a talented teen witch and her many hot boy familiars. But out of all of them, she only has eyes for one: Morihito, a.k.a. “Moi.” They were childhood friends, but now he protects her. He also happens to be descended from a line of ogres, and his stoic ways prevent his feelings from really going anywhere.
At least for now, that’s the main thing getting in the way of the two of them being together. Manga readers will know that more than one chapter focuses on Moi actually connecting with his feelings. But as the story continues, there are bigger problems standing between the two…
Reiko and Hajime, Kowloon Generic Romance
At first glance, Kowloon Generic Romance looks like a cute retro love story. The story takes place in Kowloon Walled City (which was demolished in 1993), and our protagonists Reiko and Hajime have a serious 80s anime vibe about them. But not all is as it seems in the crowded city of Kowloon. For example, why do people have smartphones? What’s the weird shape floating in the sky? And why are there photos of Reiko from a time she doesn’t remember?
Much like Kowloon itself, Kowloon Generic Romance hides a wide variety of unsettling, unearthly secrets. And while these two coworkers may appear to be an adorably perfect match at first, one of these secrets stands between them. And to find out how to move forward, Reiko will have to dig deep to find out who she really is.
