Shin Megami Tensei Hits iOS

Big In Japan (third only to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest), the Megami Tensei series has spawned about a billion games, only a few of which have been released Stateside (the most notable example being the spinoff series Persona).

That excludes Shin Megami Tensei (or “True Goddess Reincarnation,” if you will), which was one of those Super Nintendo games your cool friends who went to import shops would post about online. Fans put together a translation patch back in the early naughts, but it’s about to get an official English release, 12 years after it hit Japan, via iOS courtesy Atlus.

Shin Megami Tensei
, for those unfamiliar with the game, is a first-person RPG set in Tokyo in the year 199X (is it just me, or is that the coolest date ever?), where demons have come to earth and caused an “[escalation] in global conflict thanks to the rise of a charismatic rebel leader in possession of a demon army.” This sounds kind of amazing.

There have been a few ports of classic Super Nintendo games to iOS, with mixed results, but turn-based RPGs have a much better chance of coming out right than twitch-based gameplay, so we’ve got a good feeling about this one. On the other hand, it looks like they built a virtual pad rather than redo the game with touch controls, which seems pretty lazy. Regardless, it’ll hit the App Store March 18th for $7.99.

Anyway, check out the trailer. That music, man! Holy cow!
