Studio Ponoc’s The Imaginary Hits Netflix July 5

Ponoc’s The Imaginary Hits Netflix July 5A few months ago, we learned that Ghibli-alum studio Ponoc was teaming up with Netflix for a multi-picture exclusive streaming deal, starting with the studio’s recent film The Imaginary.

Now we’ve learned when that film is set to hit Netflix: July 5. In addition, the film will be screened at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival and will play in enough theaters in the US to qualify for an Academy Award submission.

The film was released in Japan back in December.

The Imaginary is based on a children’s novel by A.F. Harrold, illustrated by Emily Gravett. Here’s the official description:

Studio Ponoc’s The Imaginary portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger. Their fantastical adventures launched from her attic, lead them to discover a magical world of creatures and places never before seen until a sinister force threatens to destroy their imaginary world and the friendship within it. Directed by renowned animator Yoshiyuki Momose (Spirited Away), The Imaginary is an unforgettable adventure of love, loss, and the healing power of imagination.
