Nausicaä Kabuki Play Returning This Summer

The Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind kabuki play is returning! The play was originally performed back in December 2019, and there’s a reasonable chance it hasn’t been back since because of COVID. However, with more people vaccinated and more things returning to normal, stage plays are going again in Japan.

This time the play will be around from July 4-29 and be performed daily at 6:30 PM at the Kabukiza theater in Tokyo. Its official name is Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä Ue no Maki: Shiroki Majo no Senki (translated as Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind First Volume: Battle Chronicle of the White Witch). Two other kabuki plays will take place each day at the same theater, and this one will finish off the evening.

Directing credit goes to G2 and Onoe Kikunosuke V. Onoe Kikunosuke V has been cast as Princess Kushana as well. Nakamura Yonekichi V leads the cast as Nausicaä. Looking toward other cast members, Nakamura Kinnosuke will play Charuka, Bando Yajuro will play Yupa, and Nakamura Matagoro II will play the Priest of the Mani Tribe.

GKIDS gave this description of the original Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind movie:

“Experience the film that launched the Academy Award-winning career of one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animation, Hayao Miyazaki!

After a global war, the seaside kingdom known as the Valley of the Wind remains one of the last strongholds on Earth untouched by a poisonous jungle and the powerful insects that guard it. Led by the courageous Princess Nausicaä, the people of the Valley engage in an epic struggle to restore the bond between humanity and Earth.

Like Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away and Ponyo, Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind will dazzle your senses with its intricately imagined storytelling and stunning animation!”
