Fall in Love, You False Angels Vol. 1

Fall in Love, You False Angels

Coco Uzuki brings us high school romance with a twist in Fall in Love, You False Angels. This upcoming Kodansha manga release focuses on the burgeoning relationship between “heartthrob angel” Otogi and fellow paragon Toki (whom Otogi calls “Ikkoku”). Otogi is the most beautiful, crushworthy girl at her school. What her classmates don’t know is her personality is heavily curated: she deliberately acts in a way that will make her adored. She’s convinced Ikkoku is the same, but she can’t see a crack in his persona… until one day she does.

Combining beautiful art and unconventional romance, Fall in Love, You False Angels scratches that shoujo manga itch. Otogi is a lovable protagonist—not for her carefully curated personality, but for the lovestruck awkwardness that overrides both her persona and her tough-as-nails attitude. This couple will be one to follow for the long haul.

Fall in Love, You False Angels goes on sale February 11.

I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day Vol. 1

I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day

Lovers of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Madoka Magica will want to pick up this new Kodansha manga release. I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day is a tragic magical girl yuri set in an orphanage… or, at least, what passes for an orphanage. In actuality, this facility trains up magically-inclined girls for combat. Sheena is one of these girls, and she watches as classmate after classmate (including her roommate) dies on the battlefield. Then she meets Mimi: a cheerful student with unbelievable combat skills and surprising powers. And, in the midst of the horrors, she takes a liking to Sheena.

I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day is tonally dissonant, but that works in its favor. Sheena’s gentle heart and Mimi’s cheerful demeanor both shine against the grim reality they’ve found themselves in. Injury and death are very real threats, but love is also a very real possibility in this setting. If you’re looking for a new yuri title with plenty of story and lovely art, give this one a try.

Hauntress

Hauntress

Originally published in 1993, Hauntress is about to be available in English for the first time thanks to Kodansha manga! This single-volume horror story blends urban legends with very real fears as it follows college student Hiroshi through the most terrifying nights of his life. When he overhears a strange woman yelling for his next-door neighbor, he ends up becoming the new object of his affection. She’s tall, gaunt-faced, and seemingly indestructible. The more he attempts to ignore her, the more she threatens him. As Hiroshi and his friends attempt to figure out why this strange woman has fixated on him, his crush Rumi weaves in and out of his life—and in and out of danger.

Mineto Mochizuki’s art and story are evocative of modern urban legends, walking the line between nightmarish and just a bit too real. Your mileage may vary on the way the ending is handled. Personally, we think it fits with the story’s style and inspirations. Either way, it’s guaranteed to keep you up at night after you read it.
