Japanese tradition requires – requires! – that on New Year’s Eve the family gather around the tube and watch Kohaku Uta Gassen. Essentially the Japanese version of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, Kohaku is an assemblage of the most popular musicians dancing and lip-syncing their way through the night.
This year’s Kohaku just got a bit anime-r with the news that μ’s, the idol group from Love Live!, will be performing on the show.
How exactly do anime characters perform at a live music event? Is this some kind of Hatsune Miku stuff? Nope. The real-life μ’s (pronounced muse) is made up of Love Live!’s voice actresses, and they’ve actually performed at several life events before, like this one from back in 2014.
Becoming real idols wasn’t easy for some of the μ’s voice actresses: Sora Tokui, who plays Nico Yazawa, had absolutely no dance experience before Love Live! (the 25 year old is also a manga artist, by the way).
Look forward to μ’s dancing and singing their way though a Japanese New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
