In case you forgot, which is understandable, last year Skydance Television acquired the global rights to Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online series, and they’re planning to produce a live-action television series. Now SAO has a pair of writer-producers lined up to act as showrunners, executive producers, and writers for the series.
Skydance is currently signing a deal with Patrick Massett and John Zinman, who previously worked on Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Blacklist, and Friday Night Lights. The pair will write the pilot episode along with Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Altered Carbon).
According to Skydance producer Marcy Ross, the studio is “deep in development” with the SAO series, and they “aim not only to satisfy the franchise’s enthusiastic sci-fi and anime fan base but also to appeal to new TV audiences the world over.”
The Sword Art Online anime series will be returning with a third season in October of 2018.
