The late great Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga kicked off 40 years ago, and Japan is celebrating in various ways, shapes and forms, including a soon-to-open 40th-anniversary store.
In addition, there’s now a box set collecting all 42 volumes of the manga on the way. Preorders run until August 3, and it ships February 4, 2026.
What’s special about the box(es), aside from collecting every volume of Toriyama’s Dragon Ball saga? Well, each volume features “double covers”: the original cover by Toriyama, plus tribute guest covers (cover covers, one might say) by manga-ka like One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda and Slam Dunk’s Takehiko Inoue.
The box retails for 31,800 yen, or about $212.
Dragon Ball kicked off in the pages of Shonen Jump back in 1984 and wrapped up in 1995. It’s one of the best-selling manga of all time. Here’s the official description from Viz:
Legend has it that if all seven of the precious orbs called “Dragon Balls” are gathered together, an incredibly powerful dragon god will appear to grant one wish. Unfortunately, the orbs are scattered across the world, making them extremely difficult to collect. Enter 16-year-old Bulma, a scientific genius who has constructed a radar to detect the exact locations of the Dragon Balls. She’s on a mission to find all seven orbs, but first she must convince young Son Goku to join her on her quest. With a monkey tail, superhuman strength and a magic staff for a weapon, Son Goku is ready to set out on the adventure of a lifetime…
