How Lupin III Influenced Rick and Morty: The Anime

Rick and Morty: The Anime is scheduled to launch on Toonami on August 15. Director Takashi Sano talked to fans ahead of this, sharing what he wants to do with the series and how it’s been influenced by his previous work.

“I wanted to focus on Morty having a bit of a story of romance throughout the series and use that as a springboard for a story that connects all of the different universes, so I introduced a new character,” Sano remarked at San Diego Comic-Con.

He continued, “You can see the respect that I paid to the original series because I didn’t want to make an anime series for anime fans, but something that everyone could enjoy.”

Along these lines, he also noted, “For me, even though it’s titled ‘The Anime,’ I didn’t necessarily set out to make ‘anime.’”

How Lupin III Gets Involved with Rick and Morty: The Anime

Sano worked on a lot of different anime over the years, including as a director, storyboard artist, key animator and more. One series he’s worked on a lot is Lupin III, where he’s done everything from animation directing to unit directing to mechanical design to key animation. And it seems Lupin subconsciously influenced Sano’s work on Morty in Rick and Morty: The Anime.

“I’ve drawn a lot of Lupin, so whether I want it or not, I think when the character walks or runs the look comes out,” he acknowledged. “I see the traces of Lupin in how Morty walks and runs… But it’s a very naturalistic influence, nothing I was trying to do.”

Adult Swim gave this official description of Rick and Morty: The Anime:

In this 10-episode anime series from the world of “Rick and Morty,” Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl who happens to be an atemporal being.
