Here Are the Favorite Ghibli Movies Based on People’s Ages

Ghibli’s Greatest Tearjerkers

Studio Ghibli films are beloved around the world, but they’re especially treasured in their home country of Japan. Line is a popular messaging app in Japan, and recently Line Research posed a question for a survey: “Which Ghibli anime do you like?”

The survey received 5,254 answers, and people couldn’t pick more than five different Ghibli movies. After getting these responses, Line shared the age ranges of the participants, and then showed which movies were the most popular with each age group.

There were 526 respondents between the ages of 10 and 19. There were 1,052 respondents for people in their twenties, and this is the largest group surveyed. There were a total of 1,050 respondents for people in their thirties, forties and fifties (for some reason it lumped all of these together). Lastly, there were 526 people in their sixties. Apparently people in their seventies and beyond did not choose to take part in the survey.

For the ten-to-nineteen-year-olds, Spirited Away took the top spot with 46 percent saying they liked this movie. From second to tenth place, here are the rest of the results: My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Arrietty, The Cat Returns, Princess Mononoke, and When Marnie Was There.

Twenty-somethings also put Spirited Away in their top spot, with 50.1% of votes. From second to tenth place, it then went like this: My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, The Cat Returns, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Ponyo, and Porco Rosso.

For people in their thirties, the most votes went to My Neighbor Totoro, not Spirited Away. Here’s the rest from second to tenth place: Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Whisper of the Heart, Howl’s Moving Castle, Porco Rosso, and Pom Poko.

My Neighbor Totoro also came in first for people in their forties. Then, from second to tenth place: Castle in the Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Porco Rosso, and Grave of the Fireflies.

Once again My Neighbor Totoro came out on top for people in their fifties. Then, from second to tenth place: Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Howl’s Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, and Ponyo.

In the last category in the survey, the top spot went to . . . none other than My Neighbor Totoro! Then from second to tenth place, it went like this: Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Porco Rosso, Ponyo, and Whisper of the Heart.

What do you think of these results?
