Despite the fact that the final Evangelion anime film opened on a Monday, it still managed to pull in some impressive numbers. With 23.8% more revenue and 21.7% more tickets sold than 2012’s Evangelion 3.0, Hideaki Anno’s long-awaited Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time now boasts the best opening day in the history of the series.
The final Evangelion anime film also managed to beat the full opening weekends for both Evangelion 1.0 and 2.0, as well as The End of Evangelion movie’s three-day opening weekend admissions. Compared to previous entries, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 opened on the most screens. 466 theaters showed the film, and MX4D, 4DX, and IMAX screenings were available on day one.
For opening day, totals added up to 827,742,000 yen, which equals about US$7,616,394. There were 539,623 tickets sold for the March 8 opening, which comes after multiple delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, all we have to do is wait for it to be released outside of Japan, hopefully sooner rather than later! In the meantime, enjoy the Hideaki Anno directed music video for Hikaru Utada’s “One Last Kiss” theme song.
