Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Returning to U.S. Theaters

It’s been ten years since the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods came out, and to mark the occasion, Toei Animation is bringing the movie back to American theaters. Specifically, it will be the Extended Edition. And while anime movies are often offered both dubbed and subbed in American theaters, this will be offered dub-only.

It will be a limited release, only hitting the big screen on October 17-18. Tickets are already on-sale now if you’re interested!

Funimation gave this description of the movie:

Following the events of the Dragon Ball Z television series, after the defeat of Majin Buu, a new power awakens and threatens humanity. Beerus, an ancient and powerful God of Destruction, searches for Goku after hearing rumors of the Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza. Realizing the threat Beerus poses to their home planet, the Z-fighters must find a way to stop him before it’s too late. Only Goku, humanity’s last hope, can ascend to the level of a legendary Super Saiyan God and stop Beerus’s from destroying Earth, and possibly the entire universe!

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods originally came out in Japanese theaters in March 2013. A little over a year later, in August 2014 (after a red carpet premiere set up by Funimation) it hit American theaters. Two months later, in October 2014, the Extended Edition became available for home release.

Nine years ago, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods made $2,553,002 in the North American box office. Do you think it can beat that this time around?

VIZ Media publishes the Dragon Ball Z manga in English and gave this description for the first volume:

Son Goku is the greatest hero on Earth. Five years after defeating the demon king Piccolo, he’s grown up and had a family–he’s married, and he has a child, Son Gohan. But what is the real reason for Goku’s incredible strength? A visitor from outer space arrives bearing terrible news–Goku is an alien, and the visitor, Raditz, is Goku’s brother! When Raditz turns out to be a ruthless killer, Goku must fight his incredibly strong brother to save his family and the entire human race. A surprising alliance may be Earth’s last hope: Goku will team up with his old enemy Piccolo…archenemies united to save the world!
