Detective Conan’s 23rd Anime Film Now Tops the Franchise

A few days ago we posted about the 23rd Detective Conan anime film breaking opening day records for the franchise, but its success didn’t stop there. With the weekend behind us, we can now see the full scale of The Fist of Blue Sapphire‘s domination, which had it pulling in 1.886 billion yen across 1.458 million admissions.

This doesn’t just put it well above the previous film’s opening weekend gross, it tops every other film in the Detective Conan franchise. This is the sixth consecutive time a new Detective Conan anime film has broken the record of previous entries, starting with 2013’s Private Eye in the Distant Sea.

This effectively put an end to the six-week box office rule of Doraemon: Nobita’s Chronicle of the Moon Exploration, which is currently the top-grossing Japanese film of the year.

Here’s how the Japanese box office shook out for the weekend of April 13-14:

1 (new). Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire – 1.88 billion yen
2 (1). Doraemon the Movie 2019 Nobita’s Chronicle of the Moon Exploration – 4.69 billion yen
3 (new). Hunter Killer
4 (2). Dumbo – 590 million yen
5 (3). Tonde Saitama – 3.3 billion yen
6 (4). Captain Marvel – 1.72 billion yen
7 (new). Halloween
8 (9). Green Book
9 (8). PreCure Miracle Universe – 820 million yen
10 (4). Bumblebee – 720 million yen
