2020 marked a boost in book sales for Japan, and much of that can be attributed to the runaway success that is Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer manga. According to an article in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the Publishing Science Institute announced that combined book sales in Japan rose to the equivalent of $15.59 billion USD in 2020, putting it up five percent from where it was in 2019.
How much of this has to do with Demon Slayer? The article says “the sales effect of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba spread not only to comics, but also to novels, magazines with supplementary materials, and other publications as a whole.”
With the release of its 23rd and final volume in December, Demon Slayer managed to surpass 120 million copies printed, so it’s no surprise that it had such a huge impact on book sales. Still, that’s a mighty impressive feat, and another great way to wrap up what was most definitely the year of Demon Slayer in Japan.
