It was already starting to seem like a foregone conclusion, but now it’s official that this winter’s Comiket 99 has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In its place, an ‘Air Comiket’ will be held virtually at some time during the end-of-year holidays, and plans for the next full Comiket are leaning toward 2021’s Golden Week holiday.
The official statement cited the difficulty of holding an event in the wake of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics postponement, and the decision to cancel came after a study on the possibility of holding the event safely under its own coronavirus Response Guidelines. The Comic Market Preparations Committee explained that this wasn’t possible, so they went ahead and canceled the winter gathering.
More details on the 2021 Comiket plans will be revealed this fall.
