Otaku USA Magazine
Comic-Con to Offer Panels with Manga Creators, Studio Ghibli Staff and More

Kiki's Delivery Service

San Diego Comic-Con, the mother of all comic cons, will be here July 25 through 28, and it will include stuff of particular interest to otaku, including panels with manga creators and a performance from Demon Slayer singer LiSA. Let’s take a look at what otaku might want to check out during the massive event!

Hitoshi Ariga, the Mega Man Megamix manga creator and character designer, will be at the con thanks to Udon Entertainment. Other big names being hosted include Goro Taniguchi (director of Code Geass), Hidetaka Tenjin (Macross artist), and Keiichi Yano (Dark Machine creator).

The first day of the con will have something perfect for Studio Ghibli fans: the “35th Anniversary Kiki’s Delivery Service” panel. Among its panelists is Hirokatsu Kihara, who used to be the Studio Ghibli Production Coordinator. Along with revealing production art, Kihara will discuss how the movie was made, including “behind-the-scenes” stuff.

On July 26, the second day of the con, there will be a panel titled “Dark Horse Manga: Discussing Lovecraft with Gou Tanabe” where Tanabe will talk about how he adapted H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Over Innsmouth into a manga.

Another panel on July 26 is “Manga Legend Katsuya Terada Live Drawing” where you can actually watch The Monkey King artist Terada draw.

Two other panels on that day are “Prime Video: Like a Dragon: Yakuza” and “Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty: The Anime First Look.” Actor Ryōma Takeuchi will be taking part in the former, along with some producers, and there’s the promise of a surprise guest. With Rick and Morty, there will be writer/director Takashi Sano, Joseph Chou and Takenari Maeda (both producers), and Jason DeMarco from Adult Swim.

Crunchyroll is offering the “Crunchyroll Concert Series,” and it’s here that you’ll be able to see LiSA perform. There will also be many booths for anime and manga companies that people can check out.
