Call of the Night Manga is Back in New “Paradise Arc”

Call of the Night: Paradise Arc

Call of the Night is back… and we don’t just mean the second season of the anime! Kotoyama’s late-night vampire rom-com is back from the dead for a limited-run manga series. The “Paradise Arc” follows Kou Yamori and his detective senpai as they explore a strange cult in a small town. Are vampires involved? Of course they are. But what do they want? And how will Kou’s experience come into play in this new story?

True Detectives

She's an idol!

Call of the Night: Paradise Arc lands us in a spot between the final two chapters. Kou and Anko are between cases, but this limbo doesn’t last for long. A disguised young lady arrives seeking their help, and two things become clear. Thing 1: she’s an idol from a girl group on the rise. Thing 2: one of her fellow idols has joined a cult obsessed with youth and immortality.

This cult is located in a small town, so Kou and Anko hit the road. All signs point to the cult being run by vampires. But of course, vampires don’t exist. Right?… Right?

On the Case

Another vampire

Well, obviously vampires are real. This is Call of the Night, after all. We’ve seen vampires for 20 volumes, including and especially Nazuna. The question now is what this particular group of vampires is up to.

The why of this young idol joining the cult is hardly a strange question. She’s obsessed with staying young and healthy, and that’s definitely something this “guru,” Lady Ushio, can offer. She’s not alone, either. The whole village (dubbed “Paradise”) refers to themselves as “offspring.” But how much do the followers really know about Lady Ushio?

What’s Next?

It begins.

The Call of the Night manga had something of an open-ended finale: the idea that Kou and Nazuna’s adventures would go on in their own way. Planting the Paradise Arc before this final chapter, and creating it as a side story, was the best possible approach. There’s no sign of Nazuna, at least in the first two chapters. But even if she stays on the sidelines for this story, that’s fine. It’s a fun change of pace for the series, as we get to see what Anko can do when she’s not stuck herding our main cast around.

Additionally, it’s a promising bit of worldbuilding. In the series proper, we get to see how a certain group of vampires operates. And while there are a variety of personalities in that little clique, any degree of separation will provide variation. The world of the manga is growing bigger, and there’s plenty of room for it to do so. Hopefully this new arc will have plenty of room to stretch and breathe.
