It wasn’t too long ago that we passed along the news of Kinji Fukasaku‘s Battle Royale getting the 3D treatment for its tenth anniversary. As odd as it is to take a decade-old movie and pop it in the third dimension, it’s not much different from George Lucas doing the same to the Star Wars franchise.
In the end, however, it’s all going to come down to how well it works. If I’m gonna see BR in 3D, I want Mitsuko Souma’s sickle flying right at me! To facilitate such an effect, it looks like they’ve added in some visual flourishes, like bullets screaming out of the screen, and extra digital blood splashing the audience’s face.
Who knows if we’ll ever see the end results in proper theatrical fashion over here (doubtful outside of limited screenings), but for those in Japan, it hits screens on November 20.
Let the games (and trailer) begin at the movie’s official site. Dig that out-of-place poppy jam scoring the carnage.
