Aniplex, the production company behind anime like Devilman Crybaby and Fullmetal Alchemist, has acquired a majority stake in software developer Live2D with an eye toward producing a full-length anime feature film.
Live2D’s software is used to move 2D images in a 3D environment. According to their official website, “with Live2D, you can animate a character that you draw exactly as it is drawn” with no need for a 3D model. The software has already been used on a large number of anime and video games.
Aniplex’s Atsuhiro Iwakami was quoted as saying, “by supporting Live2D’s business while pushing its filmmaking technology forward, I am sure we will be able to create a brand-new kind of film.”
Here’s looking forward to whatever these two firms cook up.
