AKB48 Creator Plans “2D Plus 3D” Idol Anime Project

Yasushi Akimoto, the creator of Japan’s best-selling idol phenomenon AKB48 and its various sub-groups, is at it again.

This time, he’s producing a “2D + 3D” anime project and recruiting some serious industry talent to help out.

The idol unit, which is described as a “dimension-breaking,” will be made up of eight members, each of whom (the 2D versions, at least) will be created by a different character designer. The two designers announced so far are Masayoshi Tanaka (Your Name, Anthem of the Heart) and Yukiko Horiguchi (K-On!, Tamako Market).

Akimoto is currently auditioning singers/voice actresses from ages 15 to 25 for the group.

The group will go “between the second and third dimension,” ostensibly meaning the voice actresses will play their characters in live performances (not unlike Love Live’s μ’s).
Excited to see some dimension-breaking idols? Burnt out on the whole idol anime thing? Sound off!
