Famitsu, one of Japan’s top gaming magazines, has compiled a big survey of Japan’s gamer population in 2024 and compared it to the same numbers from a decade ago (2015 was seriously 10 years ago?).
The top-line number shows an increase in the number of people who identify as gamers in general, from 48.5 million to 54.7 million. That’s despite the population of Japan as a whole decreasing, from about 127m in 2015 to about 124m in 2024.
The numbers have also gone up for console gamers (26.1m to 29.5m) and especially for mobile gamers (33.7m to 42.8m, a jump of about 9m).
The only category that saw a decrease was PC gamers: from 17.5m in 2015 to 14.5m in 2024.
Meanwhile, Famitsu revealed that the 3 top-selling physical releases from 2005 to 2024 were Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch, 2020), New Super Mario Bros. (DS, 2006), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch, 2017).
Fewer PC gamers and more mobile gamers in Japan: perhaps unsurprising, despite all the interest in Vtubers and streamers these days. What’s your preferred gaming style?
