Junk World, the sequel to Takehide Hori’s stop-motion sci-fi film Junk Head, has a release date. The film will be released in Japanese theaters on June 13, 2025.
Alongside that news came a poster and some new info about the film. It takes place 1042 years before Junk Head, but features the same central robot, known as Robin in the new film. In Junk World, Robin serves as an escort for the human female captain named Tris. It’s described as the second film in the Junk trilogy.
Like Junk Head, Hori serves as director, screenwriter, cinematographer, gaffer and editor. Luckily for us, unlike Junk Head, this new one didn’t take seven years to make.
Here’s a further description of the plot:
Long ago, humans developed underground due to the decrease in aboveground habitats. As a labor force, they created Mulligans, artificial life forms that resemble humans. However, the Mulligans rebelled against mankind by cloning themselves and spreading their influence. The story takes place 230 years after the third cease-fire agreement. Mulligans rule the underground world that has spread on a global scale, while humans remain above ground.
Hori completed the first 30-minute Junk Head pilot film in 2013, and the full-length film in 2017. He then reedited the film for release in Japanese theaters in 2021. The film became a hit on the arthouse circuit, earning 140 million yen. The film is available on several streaming platforms in the US.
