My Hero Academia’s character Best Jeanist is a pretty distinct-looking character, and his name references something in the real world. The Best Jeanist is an annual award that the Japan Jeans Council began giving out in 1984 and continues to give out to this day. And who is this year’s winner?
The character Best Jeanist is.
True, Best Jeanist the character received the award many times in canon, but this is the first time the character gets the award in real life. He’s specifically getting the Best Jeanist special contribution award.
So how does a fictional character accept an award?
His actor, Hikaru Midorikawa, offered a video acceptance speech for the ceremony on November 14. Midorikawa, as Best Jeanist, explains in the audio that he’s really sorry he couldn’t attend, because he needs to fight a villain. He still makes sure to thank everybody, and gets it so that Midorikawa will accept the award for him.
Original creator Kohei Horikoshi also got in on the fun by drawing an illustration to go with the news. The illustration has both Best Jeanist and Bakugo.
Horikoshi wasn’t expecting the character to have a real world win, and he thanked fans and Midorikawa.
My Hero Academia is one of the most successful manga franchises in recent memory. As of this spring, more than 100 million copies of it are out in circulation.
VIZ Media publishes the original My Hero Academia manga and gave this description for the first volume:
