In 2023, the Japan Society screened Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s anime Angel’s Egg (a.k.a. Tenshi no Tamago in Japanese) in New York City. That was the first time the 1985 OVA had an official watch in the West. But now there’s word of a 4K remaster, so that might mean that the anime will become more available. The remaster is also meant to commemorate the anime’s 40th anniversary, though we’re still a little ways out from that.
Tokuma Shoten is behind the remaster, and is using “a new scan of a 35mm film print of the anime.” Oshii is involved with this process by supervising the work.
Oshii and Amano came up with the basic story, then Oshii penned the script. He helmed the project as the director at Studio DEEN. The task of art direction went to Amano. It was produced by multiple people: Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada. Credit for composing the music goes to Yoshihiro Kanno.
Some of Oshii’s other credits include Ghost in the Shell, Blood: The Last Vampire, and 1981’s Urusei Yatsura. Some of Amano’s other credits for design work include Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D.
Not a whole lot of information has been shared, such as a potential release dates, or if there are plans to put this in theaters or directly on home video.
The Japan Society gave this description of the anime’s plot:
Taking place in a seemingly quiescent time, two nameless strangers—a girl bearing a mystical egg and a man with a cruciate cane—journey across a primordial realm of decadent ruins, primitive fish and fossilized relics. An allegorical fantasy enriched by symbolism and biblical allusion, Oshii’s beautifully melancholic OVA ruminates on the tragic underpinnings of existence in a world untouched by God.
