On November 26, 2023, Rie Takahashi, the voice actress of Ai Hoshino in Oshi no Ko, did a live performance of the anime’s hit opening theme song, “Idol.” This was part of the “Ichigo Production☆Fan Thanksgiving 2023” event, and it turns out, it’s not the only time to hear Takahashi sing the song. This month, Takahashi’s official cover of the song was released on YouTube, and it already has millions of views.
The opening song was performed by YOASOBI for the anime, and it’s topped a number of charts, both in Japan and internationally. In fact, in 2023 “Idol” was the number one most searched song on Google, and the third most common “Hum to Search” song for the site. The song’s catchy tune also led it hitting the top spots on the Billboard Global chart and the Apple’s Music Top 100: Global chart.
Oshi no Ko began as a manga created by Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari, and it soon got an anime adaptation that’s being streamed in America by HIDIVE, both subbed and dubbed. There is going to be a second season.
Creator Akasaka has said about Oshi no Ko, “With the spread of the internet, we live in a society where fans’ voices are heard directly. I want people to know how young talents are being hurt, exploited, and suffering.”
Yen Press publishes the original manga in English, and gave this description for its plot:
Gorou is a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense! Lies are an idol’s greatest weapon in this outrageous manga from Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).
