The winners of the Tokyo Anime Award Festival have been revealed! To be eligible, an anime had to premiere between the dates October 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023. Let’s take a look at who won.
The award for best TV anime went to Oshi no Ko, while the award for best movie anime was snagged by The First Slam Dunk.
The award for original work/best screenplay — as well as the award for best director — both went to Slam Dunk creator (and The First Slam Dunk writer and director) Takehiko Inoue. The First Slam Dunk was really rocking at this event, as The First Slam Dunk CG director Daiki Nakazawa also got an award for the background/coloring/visual category.
The award for best animator was given to Takeshi Honda, known as the chief animation director for Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
The award for the category sound/performance went to YOASOBI, meaning it veered back to Oshi no Ko territory, as YOASOBI is behind the anime’s opening theme song.
Fans got to give their say for the Anime Fan award, and IDOLiSH7 the Movie LIVE 4bit BEYOND THE PERiOD got the most votes.
GKIDS licensed The First Slam Dunk and gave this description for it:
Shohoku’s “speedster” and point guard, Ryota Miyagi, always plays with brains and lightning speed, running circles around his opponents while feigning composure.
Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had a brother who was three years older. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a famous local player from a young age, Ryota also became addicted to basketball.
In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship.
And now, they are on the brink of challenging the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School.
HIDIVE is streaming Oshi no Ko and gave this description for it:
Dr. Goro is reborn as the son of the young starlet Ai Hoshino after her delusional stalker murders him. Now, he wants to help his new mother rise to the top, but what can a child do about the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry?
