Godzilla Minus One, this year’s Godzilla film, will soon be coming at you sans color. The film is getting a monochrome release called Godzilla -1.0/C, or Godzilla Minus One Minus Color. The desaturated version of the film hits Japanese theaters January 12.
According to director Takashi Yamazaki, he didn’t simply hit the “convert to B&W” button, but carefully oversaw each shot to create “style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography” and “unearth the texture of the skin and the details of the scenery that were hidden in the photographed data.”
Sounds like a similar process as the ones undergone for the black and white releases of Mad Max: Fury Road and Parasite.
Of course, the original 1954 Godzilla film to which Minus One pays tribute (and its sequel) were filmed in black and white. The franchise went color with its third feature, King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).
