Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume have been doing well for themselves both critically and commercially, with the former topping the box office for the U.S. this past weekend. Now both films are officially up for another award as they’ve been nominated for the 2024 Golden Globes in the category of Best Motion Picture Animated.
This follows The Boy and the Heron‘s recent landing of a New York Film Critics Award. Here’s what the pair of features will be up against:

Crunchyroll released Suzume in theaters in April 2023, followed by a limited return on October 27. GKIDS put The Boy and the Heron in North American theaters on December 8, and gave this description for it:
A young boy named Mahito
yearning for his mother
ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead.
There, death comes to an end,
and life finds a new beginning.
A semi-autobiographical fantasy
about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship,
from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years, The Boy and the Heron is a hand-drawn, original story written and directed by the Academy Award®-winning director. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for the film “Spinning Globe” was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.
