Oshi no Ko’s opening theme song, “Idol” by YOASOBI, continues to perform phenomenally. Earlier this month it reached the top spot in the Billboard Global chart, and now it’s nabbed the top spot on Apple’s Music Top 100: Global chart. This shows that anime, as well as the music associated with it, really is growing to a global audience of fans.
The song has been doing well since the very beginning, as it hit the number one spot on Billboard Japan’s streaming song chart its first week. In five weeks it got more than 100 million streams, which is a best-ever in Japan. In nine weeks it had more than 200 million streams, another record.
There is also an English version of the song, and that topped the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey. This is a history maker, as no song that was originally sung in Japanese has ever done this on the U.S. survey.
The popular anime is currently streaming on HIDIVE, and is said to be the platform’s “#1 series launch in the streamer’s history.”
The original manga, by Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari, is published in America by Yen Press. It is meant to be about the dark side of the entertainment industry, and Yen Press gave this description for the first volume:
“Gorou is a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense! Lies are an idol’s greatest weapon in this outrageous manga from Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).”
The original manga has received multiple awards and nominations, including winning at the 46th annual Kodansha Manga awards and the “Next Manga Awards” (Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishō).
