This July will mark the premiere of a live-action TV drama based on the Barakamon manga by Satsuki Yoshino. Along with the reveal of the release month, Fuji TV announced that the series will star Yosuke Sugino in the role of Seishu Handa, pictured in the promotional image below.

Yoshino’s manga first kicked off in the pages of Square Enix’s Gangan Online magazine in 2009, ultimately ending in December 2018 after 18 volumes. Barakamon previously inspired a 12-episode TV anime adaptation in 2014, and the 2013-2016 Handa-kun prequel manga was also adapted into an anime in 2016.

Yen Press publishes the original Barakamon manga in English and sums up the story like so:

For a certain reason, a handsome young calligrapher by the name of Seishuu Handa uproots himself and moves to an island on the westernmost edge of Japan. “Sensei,” as he comes to be known, is a city boy through and through, and has never experienced rural life until now. And by the looks of it, he has much to learn! From navigating public roads by tractor to resigning himself to having his new digs commandeered by the local children as their new hangout, the list of Sensei’s hardships is shaping up to be long indeed!
