Makoto Shinkai, the director of your name. and Weathering With You, appears to have another hit on his hands. His latest film, Suzume, which opened in Japan on November 11, was #1 at the box office over its debut weekend.
The film earned 1.88 billion yen (about $13.5 million) over its first three days, which is more than either your name. or Weathering With You made in their opening weekends—47.4% and 14.4% more, respectively.
Of course, a strong opening doesn’t mean everything. your name. went on to run in theaters for months in Japan, eventually becoming one of the country’s top earners of all time (Weathering didn’t do too bad, either, to be clear).
Meanwhile, One Piece Film Red is still going strong: it was #3 at the box office the same weekend.
Suzume will be released by Crunchyroll in the US in early 2023.
