This week began with Crunchyroll revealing November premiere plans for the One Piece Film Red feature’s voyage to English audiences, and it coincided nicely with yet another milestone for the film in Japan. According to the latest from the Japanese box office, Toei Animation’s production is now the biggest film of 2022 so far in the region.
At the time of the announcement, One Piece Film Red had hit an amazing 13.87 billion yen, which adds up to around US$100.48 million and over 9.94 million tickets sold. That pushes Film Red nicely past the previous champion, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, to become the year’s highest-grossing film. It’s also currently sitting at 14th place in the all-time Japanese box office charts, which means JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is now the 15th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan.
As for anime films, One Piece Film Red is in 8th place behind Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You, which topped 14.19 billion yen during its run and sits in 13th place on the all-time charts for Japan.
One Piece Film Red hits Australia and New Zealand on November 3, followed by the United States and Canada on November 4.
Here’s the latest English trailer, and if you missed it, there’s also a spoiler-filled trailer with more backstory on Luffy, Shanks and Uta.
Crunchyroll describes the feature like so:
Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter
