Yesterday Otaku USA reported that the Spirited Away stage play was on hiatus because Romi Park, who plays Yubaba and Zeniba in alternating performances, had caught COVID. Rather than have the alternating actress take over as Yubaba and Zeniba, the production felt it was best to call everything off and reassess Monday. It now appears that this was a good idea, as we can confirm more people associated with the play have come down with COVID. This includes Mone Kamishiraishi, one of the two actresses playing the lead character, Chihiro.
The staff further said that “multiple” people have caught COVID, but did not give more details on who they are or how they’re doing.
All performances between now and Saturday are off. The play, which is traveling around Japan, is currently in Nagoya until July 4. All performances have been sold out, both here and in the other cities it’s visited. There have been plans to stream the performances scheduled for this Sunday and Monday, though all of this is up in the air now.
Along with playing Chihiro, Kamishiraishi has lent her talents to your name, L-DK, and Chihayafuru.
Spirited Away is the second most successful anime film ever made, and only recently lost the top spot to Demon Slayer. GKIDS gave this description of it:
