loundraw, the illustrator behind I want to eat your pancreas and Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, is about to make his directorial debut with the anime short Summer Ghost. A trailer has dropped for it, and in it we can hear Nobunaga Shimazaki play Ryo and Rina Kawaei play Ayane.
Summer Ghost becomes available in Japan on November 12.
The anime is being made at Flat Studio, which was founded by loundraw. The screenplay was written by Otsuichi, the author of Goth and Zoo, under the name Hirotaka Adachi. It’s being produced and planned by Flagship Line.
The story is about high school students struggling with different issues, and how they hope to find some sort of help through a summer ghost who allegedly shows up around exploding fireworks.
There are also already plans for parts of the franchise that go beyond the anime. A manga adaptation by Yoshi Inomi will debut on October 8. And, no surprise, Otsuichi himself has penned a novel to go with the anime. It will be more detailed about the story than the anime is and come out on October 29. There’s also going to be a spinoff novel called Ichinose Yūna ga Uiteiru (translated as Yūna Ichinose Is Floating) that’s coming in November.
Besides Nobunaga Shimazaki and Rina Kawaei, the cast also consists of Chiaki Kobayashi playing Tomoya Sugisaki and Miyuri Shimabukuro playing Aoi Harukawa. Ayane is listed as the “summer ghost” in the title.
Talking about the anime, loundraw remarked, “Unchanging at any time, I want to find my steadfast self. This project is a challenge to find the true ‘loundraw’ with myself and everyone.” According to the illustrator, this anime is just one section of his Project Common, which is meant to “to express the true loundraw.”
