Many Japanese fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have found what at first glance might appear to be an unlikely tourist spot for their fandom: Senkoji temple in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture.
If you’re a fan of Jujutsu Kaisen you’ll be familiar with the character Ryomen Sukuna, but this is not someone the creator made up. Stories about Ryomen Sukuna go back more than a thousand years, and while some parts of Japan have viewed him as a demon, in the area of this temple there’s a story that he discovered the area and ruled over it (in a good way). There’s a positive connotation, and there are multiple statues of him at this temple.
The temple’s chief priest, Daien Oshita (above), has read the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and encourages visitors and tourists. He enjoys teaching them about the area and its stories. “Learning about the history of Ryomen Sukuna from different angles will prompt people to think about good and evil,” he remarked.
