Every February, the Northern island of Hokkaido is host to the Sapporo Snow Festival, which typically attracts around two million people to the region to take in the amazing snow and ice sculptures based on anime, manga, other aspects of pop culture, and the world at large. This year’s event was supposed to be a smaller version of the usual annual affair, but now it’s been canceled altogether due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
This marks the first time for the Sapporo Snow Festival to be canceled in 71 years. To make up for the lack of a physical event, the operating committee is looking into creating an online space full of photos and historical information to celebrate its legacy. They will also be showing videos of past festivals on electronic billboards downtown.
Here’s hoping the event after this one will be back to normal.
