Shaft, the anime studio behind many fan favorites, has been hired by the Tokyo district of Ikebukuro. The studio is creating a promotional video that’s meant to appeal to anime fans from both inside and outside Japan.
The full video is set to premiere January 17, 2019, but there’s a 15-second clip available now. The line in the clip, translated, goes “in this town, the lead role is you.”
The ad will be directed by Yukio Takatsu (animation director on Burst Angel, Kaleido Star) with a script from Reiko Yoshida (A Silent Voice). It’s a co-production between Toshima Ward, where Ikebukuro is located, and Animate.
The full version, which will run three minutes, will stream online.
Ikebukuro has long been known as a place for anime and manga, especially for women. It’s also the setting of Durarara!!.
